It can hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water. Yet, its concentration in the skin drops by nearly half by age 50, often without any noticeable signs.
What You Need to Know
Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a molecule naturally produced by our body, present in almost all our tissues: skin, joints, eyes, cartilage, vascular walls. Its fundamental property is its ability to capture and retain water: up to 1,000 times its own weight.
This property gives it its role as a natural lubricant and hydrating cushion in tissues. In the skin, it is part of the extracellular matrix, where it contributes to volume and suppleness. In the joints, it is a component of synovial fluid and surrounds cartilage. In the eyes, it is involved in the hydration of the vitreous humor.
Long confined to aesthetics (injections, creams), hyaluronic acid also exists in oral form. Published studies describe intestinal absorption, followed by distribution through circulation, reaching areas that topical treatments cannot.

Hyaluronic Acid: A Key Molecule in Skin Aging
This reference review establishes that from the age of 25, hyaluronic acid production gradually decreases. By age 50, skin concentration has dropped by nearly 50%. The authors report that this loss is associated with tissue dehydration, decreased skin volume, loss of elasticity, and increased vulnerability to environmental aggressors.
What this means in practice: the visible aging of the skin is not just about collagen. The authors also associate it with a loss of interstitial water, and hyaluronic acid is the molecule that retains this water.
“Skin aging isn't just about collagen: the authors also describe a loss of the water that gives skin its volume.”
Why We Run Low
The decrease in hyaluronic acid is a natural process, but it is accelerated by several daily factors:
The signs associated with this in the literature appear gradually: dull and less plump skin, less flexible joints, a sensation of dryness, increased sensitivity to aggressors. These signals are often attributed solely to fatigue or stress.
The BIOLOGYST Formulation
Antioxidant Defense was formulated around the two documented mechanisms of HA loss: oxidative stress that degrades it, and the lack of renewal that depletes it. The formula combines direct low molecular weight HA intake with antioxidant active ingredients.
| Active Ingredient | Role |
|---|---|
| ExceptionHYAL® Star (240 mg) | Patented form of very low molecular weight hyaluronic acid, providing 218 mg of pure HA. Published studies on this form describe superior intestinal absorption and tissue bioavailability compared to standard HA, due to the reduced chain size. See also our dossier Active Ingredients. |
| Quercetin (427.5 mg) | Flavonoid studied for its inhibitory action on metalloproteinases (MMPs): enzymes that degrade HA and collagen. Authors also describe modulation of the NF-κB pathway and stabilization of mast cells. |
| Setria® L-Glutathione (375 mg) | Described in the literature as the main intracellular antioxidant. Publications report its role in neutralizing free radicals, in hepatic detoxification, and in maintaining cellular redox potential via the GSH/GSSG cycle. |
| Vitamin C (150 mg · 187.5% NRV) | Vitamin C contributes to normal collagen formation and to protecting cells from oxidative stress. It is a cofactor for hydroxylases involved in this synthesis, participates in the Nrf2 pathway, and regenerates glutathione and vitamin E. |
“Providing hyaluronic acid without protecting what you provide is like filling a leaky bucket.”
Is This For You?
Antioxidant Defense was formulated for those concerned by the mechanisms described above: tissue hydration, oxidative stress, HA renewal. The following profiles inspired the formulation:
How to take Antioxidant Defense. 2 to 3 capsules per day, preferably in the morning on an empty stomach or before meals, to optimize the absorption of HA and antioxidants. Take for 2 to 3 months, repeatable: observations reported on skin quality and tissue hydration generally span a period of at least 6 weeks.
Precautions. Food supplement not a substitute for a varied and balanced diet. Not recommended for pregnant and breastfeeding women.
The BIOLOGYST range enriched with hyaluronic acid
Hyaluronic acid is present in three BIOLOGYST formulations: each with its own formulation focus and associated active ingredients.
Hyaluronic acid: 100 mg (ExceptionHYAL® Star) · Stick, 1 per day.
Combination of OVODERM® egg membrane and vitamin C, which contributes to normal collagen formation. The egg membrane is studied for its contribution of extracellular matrix constituents.
Dosage: 1 stick/day in the morning · 2-3 month course.
Hyaluronic acid: 136.5 mg · Capsules, 2 to 3 per day.
Combination of ABG10+® black garlic, resveratrol, and CoQ10, active ingredients studied for their action on endothelial function and microcirculation.
Dosage: 2-3 capsules in the morning · 2-3 month course.
Hyaluronic acid: 218 mg (ExceptionHYAL® Star · highest dose in the range) · Capsules, 2 to 3 per day.
Combination of Setria® glutathione and quercetin, supplemented with vitamin C which helps protect cells against oxidative stress and contributes to normal collagen formation.
Dosage: 2-3 capsules on an empty stomach in the morning · 2-3 month course.
The three formulas are complementary and can be combined as needed. If in doubt about the most suitable formula for your profile, consult your healthcare professional.
Explore the active ingredients
Published studies describe intestinal absorption, followed by distribution into tissues, where topical treatments do not penetrate. For very low molecular weight forms, such as ExceptionHYAL® Star, authors report superior intestinal absorption and tissue bioavailability compared to standard HA.
Synthesis decreases from age 25. By age 50, skin concentration has dropped by approximately 50%, and by age 70 it is almost absent from the deep layers of the dermis (Papakonstantinou et al., Dermato-Endocrinology, 2012).
Antioxidant Defense provides the highest dose in the range: 218 mg of pure HA (ExceptionHYAL® Star), combined with Setria® glutathione, quercetin, and vitamin C. This is followed by Vital Flow (136.5 mg) and Power Hydra Flow (100 mg).
The three differ in their associated active ingredients: OVODERM® egg membrane and vitamin C for Power Hydra Flow; ABG10+® black garlic, resveratrol, and CoQ10 for Vital Flow; Setria® glutathione, quercetin, and vitamin C for Antioxidant Defense. The three are complementary and can be combined. If in doubt, ask your healthcare professional for advice.
