Your skin feels tight, lacks suppleness, your facial contours sag, and wrinkles deepen. You apply cream after cream, but the effects remain superficial, temporary, never truly lasting. The sponge and trellis analogy. Imagine the dermis as a three-dimensional sponge whose walls are made of intertwined threads (collagen and elastin). The sponge is soaked in a thick gel (hyaluronic acid) that retains water. When the threads thin and become sparse (collagen loss), when the gel dries out (hyaluronic acid loss), the sponge shrivels: the skin sags, wrinkles, and loses its bounce. Applying a moisturizing cream to a dried-out sponge only dampens the surface; the inside remains dry.
Why your skin dehydrates: even if you drink water
Water in the skin: a matter of structure, not quantity
It is often believed that dry skin is a matter of the amount of water drunk. This is a simplistic view. The skin retains water thanks to a network of specialized molecules: notably hyaluronic acid, proteoglycans, and glycosaminoglycans, which capture water molecules and hold them in the tissues. If these molecules are lacking or degrade, water leaves the skin even if you drink enough.

What is lost over time, and faster than you think
From the age of 25, collagen production decreases by about 1% per year. By 40, skin has lost an average of 15% of its collagen stores. By 50, the drop in hyaluronic acid production accelerates further, exacerbated by the decline in estrogen during menopause.
These losses are accelerated by sun exposure (UV rays degrade collagen via matrix metalloproteinases), smoking, pollution, excessive sugar (which creates glycation bridges that stiffen collagen fibers), and chronic stress.

Collagen: the reinforced concrete of your skin
Collagen accounts for 75% of dermal proteins. These are long protein fibers braided into triple helices that give the skin its mechanical resistance and volume. Without collagen, the skin sags like a fabric that has lost its weave.
There are several types of collagen in the skin. Types I and III are the most abundant. From the age of 25, fibroblasts (the cells that produce collagen) slow down their production. In parallel, degradation enzymes (metalloproteinases) remain active, creating a progressive imbalance between synthesis and destruction.

Hydrolyzed collagen peptides, skin elasticity, and hydration
Randomized, double-blind clinical trial (n=69 women, 35-55 years old, 8 weeks). Supplementation with hydrolyzed collagen peptides significantly improved skin elasticity (+7% vs placebo), hydration (+28%), and dermal density. The effects were more pronounced in women over 50. The authors observe an increase in fibroblast activity and stimulation of new collagen synthesis.
Elastin: the spring of your skin
Elastin is the protein that allows skin to return to its shape after deformation: like an elastic band. It is present in much smaller quantities than collagen (4% of dermal proteins), but its role is irreplaceable: without it, skin remains creased after being pinched, the oval sags, and features drop.
Unlike collagen, elastin is practically impossible to reproduce after adulthood. The elastin stock is mainly built up during childhood and adolescence. What is lost – due to sun, smoking, or time – does not spontaneously regenerate. This explains the research interest in nutritional contributions for connective tissue, and in lifestyle factors that accelerate its degradation.

Natural eggshell membrane (NEM/OVOMET®): skin flexibility and joint comfort
Randomized, double-blind clinical trial (n=67, 30 days) evaluating natural eggshell membrane (NEM/OVOMET®), a concentrated source of collagen, elastin, and glycosaminoglycans. Compared to placebo, the supplemented group showed significant improvement in skin flexibility and hydration, as well as a reduction in joint pain and stiffness. The authors conclude that the eggshell membrane protein matrix provides a complete structural contribution to connective tissues.
Hyaluronic acid: the dermis's water sponge
Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a glycosaminoglycan naturally present in the dermis. Its main property is remarkable: a single molecule can capture and retain up to 1,000 times its weight in water. It is what gives the dermis its plump, bouncy, smooth appearance, the famous "baby skin."
The HA stock decreases with age: at 50, we have half as much as at 20. At 60, the reduction can reach 75%. This decline is accelerated by UV rays, which fragment HA molecules via free radicals, and by hyaluronidase enzymes, which degrade it faster than it is synthesized.

Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial (n=96, 12 weeks). Oral hyaluronic acid supplementation (120 mg/day) significantly improved skin hydration, reduced dryness and roughness, and increased facial skin suppleness. Histological analyses confirmed an increase in hyaluronic acid content in the superficial layers of the epidermis, showing that oral HA effectively reaches the skin.
Skin and joints: the same connective tissue
Articular cartilage and skin share the same basic architecture: an extracellular matrix rich in collagen, elastin, and glycosaminoglycans. It is no coincidence that people whose skin ages quickly often also experience early joint pain: both phenomena are two sides of the same biological reality: the depletion of connective tissue.
The synovial fluid that lubricates the joints is also rich in hyaluronic acid. Its decrease with age results in less well-lubricated joints, friction, morning stiffness, and pain during effort. Oral intake of collagen, elastin, and HA is studied for its simultaneous action on the skin and joints.

Clinical study on 60 adult subjects (12 weeks): oral hyaluronic acid intake led to significant improvement in skin hydration and elasticity, as well as a reduction in knee pain in subjects with joint discomfort. Clinical study on eggshell membrane supplementation (NEM/OVOMET®) in subjects suffering from joint discomfort. The authors attribute these results to the combined contribution of type I, V, and X collagen, elastin, chondroitin sulfate, and hyaluronic acid contained in the eggshell membrane.
