Nigella oil: what the science really says, and how to choose it well

It is called black cumin, nigella seed or Nigella sativa. Its oil has travelled through the centuries and now fills the shelves. Here is what it contains, what research is studying, and the three criteria for choosing it well.

Nigella oil is one of those ingredients everyone thinks they know. You find it in bottles in the grocery aisle, in capsules at the pharmacy, and it circulates on social media with promises that often go beyond what the science says. At Biologyst, we took the opposite route: start from the publications, then say clearly what is established, what is being studied, and what no brand has the right to promise.

This guide answers the questions people really ask before buying: what is nigella oil, what is thymoquinone, should you choose capsules or a bottle, how much to take, and which precautions to follow.

What is nigella oil?

Nigella (Nigella sativa L.) is a small flowering plant of the buttercup family, grown since Antiquity around the Mediterranean, in the Middle East and in South Asia. Its black, angular seeds, with a slightly peppery taste, are used in cooking under the name black cumin, even though the plant has nothing to do with cumin.

The oil is obtained by pressing these seeds. It contains two fractions: a fixed oil, rich in unsaturated fatty acids (mainly linoleic acid, an omega-6, and oleic acid), and a small volatile fraction, responsible for its strong smell, where thymoquinone is concentrated. A reference review published in 2003 by Ali and Blunden describes these two fractions and notes that the seeds also contain proteins, alkaloids and saponins.

Nigella, black cumin, habba sawda: one single ingredient

Depending on the country, you will come across the names nigella, black cumin, black seed, habba sawda or kalonji. They all refer to the same seed. The botanical name, Nigella sativa, is the only one that counts on a label.

Thymoquinone, the molecule everyone is talking about

Thymoquinone is the most studied compound in nigella: most of the scientific literature focuses on it, mainly in the laboratory and in animals.

Remember one practical point: thymoquinone also serves as a quality marker. Its content depends on the origin of the seeds, how they are stored and the extraction process. This is precisely where commercial oils differ.

Scientific study · 2022

Not all nigella oils are equal

Khaikin E. et al., Nutrients, 2022 · University of Bonn

A scientific study carried out at the University of Bonn measured thymoquinone in six oils and five capsule products sold commercially. Contents ranged from 3.08 to 809.4 mg per 100 g, a difference of more than 250 times between two products bearing the same name. The authors argue that thymoquinone content should be regulated, so that everyone knows what they are buying.

Read the abstract on PubMed

Another scientific study, conducted in Malaysia in 2020 by Alkhatib and colleagues, came to the same conclusion: from 0.07% to 1.88% thymoquinone depending on the oil, a difference of about 27 times. In other words, two bottles of “nigella oil” may have almost nothing in common. For transparency: we do not publish a measured thymoquinone content for Nigelle Active+. What we guarantee is the dose of oil, 1,500 mg per 3 capsules, and cold pressing.

Two bottles bearing the same name can contain thymoquinone levels that are worlds apart.

Nigella oil and health: what can be said, and what cannot

This is the most searched question, and it deserves an honest answer. Nigella is the subject of an abundant scientific literature, covering many lines of research, without any effect being attributable to a food supplement. A large share of this work is still carried out in the laboratory or in animals, however, and human trials are heterogeneous.

In Europe, health claims for plants are still under evaluation. No health claim is currently authorised for nigella oil itself. We have therefore chosen not to attribute any effect to it.

The role of vitamin E, on the other hand, is recognised

What is authorised is what vitamin E provides: vitamin E contributes to the protection of cells from oxidative stress. This is why Nigelle Active+ combines nigella oil with 4.55 mg of vitamin E per 3 capsules, i.e. 38% of nutrient reference values. Vitamin E also protects the oil itself from oxidation, which matters for an oil rich in unsaturated fatty acids.

What Nigelle Active+ contains Per 3 capsules
Nigella oil (Nigella sativa L.), cold-pressed 1,500 mg
Vitamin E (alpha-tocopherol) 4.55 mg, i.e. 38% of NRVs

Capsules or bottle: which form to choose?

Both forms contain the same oil. What changes is precision, storage and taste.

  • The dose is fixed. A capsule always contains the same amount of oil, whereas a spoonful varies from one day to the next.
  • The oil is protected. Sealed in a softgel, it stays away from air and light, which degrade the fatty acids and the volatile fraction once the bottle is opened.
  • The taste disappears. Nigella oil is bitter and pungent. In a capsule, the ritual becomes sustainable over time.
  • The bottle keeps an advantage in cooking, drizzled over a cold dish.

How to choose a quality nigella oil?

Three criteria are enough to rule out most disappointing products.

1. Cold pressing

Mechanical pressing without heating better preserves the fragile compounds of the seed, including the volatile fraction. Hot or solvent extraction is mainly aimed at yield.

2. A clear composition

The dose of oil per serving should be written out in full, in milligrams. Be wary of “extracts” with no dose or ratio, or formulas where nigella is just one ingredient among fifteen.

3. An oil protected from oxidation

An oil rich in unsaturated fatty acids oxidises. An opaque capsule, an amber bottle and the presence of an antioxidant such as vitamin E are good signs. A rancid oil smells of paint or cardboard, very different from the peppery note of a fresh oil.

How to take nigella oil?

For Nigelle Active+, the recommended dose is 2 to 3 capsules per day, with a large glass of water, preferably with meals, as a 1 to 2 month course that can be repeated. A box of 60 capsules therefore lasts 20 to 30 days. Taking the oil with a meal that contains fat is also the most natural way to consume a fat.

Precautions. Use with caution if you are taking anticoagulant treatment. Not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice if you are on medication. Do not exceed the recommended daily dose. Keep out of the reach of young children. Food supplements should not be used as a substitute for a varied and balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle.

Nigella, lactoferrin, vitamin D: the ritual that brings them together

Nigelle Active+ is one of the three formulas in our ritual combining nigella, lactoferrin and vitamin D, alongside Lactoferrine Active+ and D3 Active+. In this set, it is vitamin D that carries the immune claim: vitamin D contributes to the normal function of the immune system. The vitamin E in Nigelle Active+, for its part, contributes to the protection of cells from oxidative stress. The ritual is offered at €80.90, less than the three formulas bought separately.

To understand lactoferrin, the milk protein that completes this ritual, read our guide Lactoferrin: what the science really says.

Frequently asked questions

What is nigella oil?
It is the oil pressed from the seeds of Nigella sativa, also called black cumin. It mainly contains unsaturated fatty acids and a small volatile fraction where thymoquinone, its most studied compound, is found.
What is thymoquinone?
Thymoquinone is the main bioactive compound studied in nigella seed. It also serves as a quality marker: a scientific study from 2022 measured contents ranging from 3.08 to 809.4 mg per 100 g depending on the commercial oil.
Does nigella oil have recognised benefits?
No health claim is currently authorised in Europe for nigella oil itself: claims for plants are still under evaluation. In Nigelle Active+, it is vitamin E that carries the authorised claim: vitamin E contributes to the protection of cells from oxidative stress.
Is it better to take nigella oil in capsules or from a bottle?
Capsules provide a fixed dose, protect the oil from air and light and mask its bitter taste. The bottle remains useful in cooking, as a food.
How many Nigelle Active+ capsules per day?
2 to 3 capsules per day with a large glass of water, preferably with meals, as a 1 to 2 month course that can be repeated. Do not exceed the recommended daily dose.
Who should not take nigella oil?
It is not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women and calls for caution if you are taking anticoagulant treatment. If you are on medication, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice.
